A millennial's journey to Daoism
My name is Gu Wei Long, was born in 1997 in Meizhou, Guang Dong province. My father told me that I had a very fine bone stature from birth which is indeed suitable for Martial Arts training. My mother told me that I had a good physic since birth. I am 21 now and that’s how I have become a stout guy, who can put extra weight just by drinking plain water.
I had gone through a tough time in my life, but then I came across with some information on internet about the Wudang Kung Fu’s mind and body training, it’s something which I have been always longing for. Locking myself at home everyday, I felt my whole being is losing the intensity and spirit to fight for life. Furthermore , my mind is completely filled with confusion and ambiguity about the future as well. I expressed my desire to my parents about going to Wudang and try learning Kung Fu for building body and at the same moment, I can get rid of all those negativity that affected my life, and they unanimously agreed.
As a matter of fact, my first visit here at Wudang Mountain, all I want to do is to see if everything is like in the movies where some Kung Fu masters leaping onto roofs and vaulting over walls and some grand masters in the Kung Fu world are still hidden there. I abandoned myself to the nature while looking out for the information on local martial arts schools and academies.
In addition to this, I myself visited many martial arts schools to see the overall structure including scenic view, food and living environment, and social culture and fees structures. Every visit was worthy of experiencing and learned so much things about the Wudang Wushu culture. Finally, I chose China Wudang Kung Fu Academy (武当师行功夫馆) for many reasons; firstly the renowned master Cheng Shixing, a Taiji poet as the head and a prominent group of coaches at the back. The peaceful and quiet spot at the country side where it is located provides a perfect environment for healing one’s mind and body; what’s more, easy accessible for transportation as well.
With the swift passage of the time, it has been two months since I joined this school. In the very beginning, I couldn’t adapt quite well with the life here but now I have clear road map for both the pursuit of the wisdom and building body.
My sleep wasn’t good at all when I first began my training. After asking advice from the coach, he said “Everyone has to go through an adaptive period after coming here and all you have to do is to integrate your mind and soul to feel and experience the peace and calmness that fills the whole atmosphere , there you will find something that you really like in it”. I followed his instructions very carefully and did everything as he told. Somehow I have no idea when my distressed mind got pacified at the end. When I talk to my parents on video call they were totally mesmerized to see the drastic changes in me and they said I have got matured now.
I have been training here for quite a long time and learnt all the skills with jokes and laughter but the daily strict workout including jogging, frog jump, deep squat, Bob jump and so on make me soaked with sweat most of the time after training. As my body got exhausted and too tired to open my mouth for food. Furthermore, there was a pain in every joint and muscle that I can only walk with the support of the railings at staircase.
Now, I’ve completely got used to it and considering my life has benefited a lot from every sweet and bitter experience here. In that way, I can clearly realize the true essence of my existence and knowing life’s latent potential. I have a great sense of accomplishment after mastering the Tiger’s palm, Seven star sword and other two fundamentals of Wudang Kung Fu. Last time when I had a conversation with my dad on the phone, he asked “How is everything going there? Are you now ready for a real fight? ”. That question stammered me for a while but I quickly reacted by saying “The core idea of practicing Wudang Taiji Kung Fu is not to turn someone a fight club member but finding the right way to nurture one’s life by taming the mind.” While learning the skills of Wudang martial arts I have reached a next level understanding on Wudang Kung Fu as well.
